Is my charging port broken? A checklist that gives you an answer

Short answer

Your charging port is worn, not broken, if the cable seats fully and charges when held at a certain angle. It is likely broken if the phone will not charge with any cable or adapter, the port looks green, black or crusty, pins are visibly bent or missing, or the port moves inside the frame. Worn ports are fixable at home for around $14.99; broken ones need a $50-150 board-level replacement.

"Broken" is the word people reach for, but a charging port fails in at least four distinct ways and only one of them is genuinely broken. The others are cheaper — sometimes free — to resolve.

Work down this checklist in order. Each answer narrows it further.

The checklist

  • Does another cable and charger work? If yes — the cable was the fault
  • Does the plug go all the way in? If no — the port is blocked with lint
  • Does it charge when held at an angle? If yes — the port is worn, not broken
  • Can you see bent, flattened or missing pins? If yes — the port is damaged
  • Is there green, white or black residue inside? If yes — corrosion, needs a repair
  • Is there no response at all in any position? If yes — port, battery or charging circuit

What each answer means

Worn, not broken

The contacts still work; the connector will not stay put. This is the most common outcome and the cheapest to solve.

Blocked, not broken

Compacted lint stops the plug bottoming out. Free to fix, and it convincingly imitates a dead port.

Damaged

Bent pins or a cracked tongue mean physical damage. Nothing external will help — the port must be replaced.

Beyond the port

No response even with a good cable, a clean port and a charged battery points to the charging IC or the battery itself. This needs proper diagnosis.

Your fix, based on the diagnosis

  1. 1

    Bad cable$8-15

Replace it. Keep the old one for the bin, not the drawer.

  2. 2

    Blocked portFree

Clean it out dry with a wooden pick and compressed air. No liquids.

  3. 3

    Worn port$14.99

Hold the cable seated with a retention base. Same-day fix, nothing to install.

  4. 4

    Damaged port$50-150

Board-level replacement at a repair shop. This is the case where paying is the right answer.

  5. 5

    Charging circuit or battery$80-350

Get a diagnosis before authorising anything. Ask specifically whether it is the port, the battery or the board.
