Charging port not working? Diagnose it in five minutes

Short answer

If your charger is not working or your phone won't charge, the problem is usually the cable, the adapter, or lint packed in the charger hole. When a charging port stops working, test in this order: try two other cables and a different wall adapter, then power the phone off and lift compacted lint out of the port with a wooden toothpick. If the cable now seats fully but slides back out, the port's retention tabs are worn and a mechanical holder will keep it charging. If the phone will not charge at any angle with any cable, or the port looks corroded or has bent pins, it needs a board-level repair costing $50-150.

"Charging port not working" covers four completely different faults with four completely different fixes. Before you pay anyone, spend five minutes narrowing it down — the test costs nothing and it changes whether you need a $0 fix, a $14.99 fix or a $100 repair.

Work through the checks in order. Stop at the first one that resolves it.

What is your phone actually doing?

  • No charging response at all, with any cable or charger
  • Charges only while you press or hold the cable
  • Charges, then stops the second the phone moves
  • Cable will not push all the way in
  • Charges slowly or keeps cycling on and off
  • Says 'moisture detected' and refuses to charge

The five-minute diagnostic

1. Swap the cable and the brick

Use a different cable and a different wall adapter — not just a different outlet. Cables fail internally with no visible damage far more often than ports do.

2. Look inside with a light

Shine a phone torch into the port. A grey felt-like pad at the bottom is compacted lint. Green or white crust is corrosion. Bent or missing pins mean a real repair.

3. Clean it out

Power off, then lift lint out with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never metal, never liquid. If the plug now clicks in and holds, you are finished.

4. Test whether it is worn

Plug in and gently wiggle. If charging cuts in and out, or only works held at an angle, the retention tabs are worn — the electrical contacts are still fine.

5. Rule out software and battery

Restart the phone. Check whether it charges from a computer USB port. A phone that is dead flat can take ten minutes before it shows any screen at all.

What to do based on what you found

  1. 1

    Found lintFree

Clean it properly and the port usually behaves like new. Repeat every few months if you carry the phone in a pocket.

  2. 2

    Found a bad cable$8-15

Replace it with a certified cable. If cables keep failing at the connector, strain from the port angle is the likely cause.

  3. 3

Port is worn but electrically fine$14.99

Life C-Port holds the cable fully seated so the connection stops dropping. This is the exact case it was designed for.

  4. 4

Corrosion, bent pins or nothing at all$50-150

This needs a board-level repair. No holder or cleaning routine will fix damaged contacts, and pretending otherwise wastes your money.

When Life C-Port™ works

  • The port passes the wiggle test as worn, not dead
  • Charging works at some angle, even briefly
  • Cleaning helped a bit but the cable still slips

When it won't help

  • There is no charging response under any condition
  • The battery itself is failing or swollen
  • The port shows corrosion or physical damage
  • The phone reports a hardware charging fault after a restart

We would rather you skip the purchase than be disappointed.
